Necklace lengths explained

Where 40, 45 and 50 cm chains sit, and which length suits which neckline.

Two gold snake chains worn at the collarbone

In short

  • About 40 cm sits at the base of the neck.
  • About 45 cm rests on the collarbone and suits most necklines.
  • About 50 cm falls just below the collarbone, which suits pendants.

Necklace length decides where a piece sits, and that changes how it looks with what you are wearing.

The common lengths

  • About 40 cm: sits at the base of the neck. Good for fine chains and small pendants.
  • About 45 cm: rests on the collarbone. The most versatile length.
  • About 50 cm: falls just below the collarbone. Good for pendants and the lowest layer of a stack.

Our necklace length guide shows each length on the body, and our guide to layering necklaces shows how to combine them.
