Keep it bright

Jewellery care

A few small habits keep gold PVD jewellery looking its best. Here is how to wear, clean and store your pieces, and what to keep away from them.

Every day

Four habits

Do these in order each time you wear a piece.

  1. Put it on last

Apply perfume, body lotion, sunscreen and hairspray first, and let them dry before you put your jewellery on.

  2. Take it off first

Remove pieces before you shower, swim, exercise, clean or go to sleep.

  3. Wipe it after wearing

Give each piece a gentle wipe with a soft, dry cloth to remove skin oils and make-up.

  4. Store it on its own

Keep each piece in its pouch, away from other jewellery, in a dry place.

Cleaning

A gentle clean

When a piece looks dull, a gentle clean brings it back.

  1. Mix a drop of mild, unscented soap into a bowl of lukewarm water.
  2. Dip a soft cloth in the water and wipe the piece gently. Do not soak pieces with stones or pearls.
  3. Wipe again with a cloth dampened in clean water.
  4. Pat completely dry with a soft, lint-free cloth before you store it.

Special pieces

Pearls, stones and fine chains

Pearls

Pearls are soft and absorb oils. Wipe them with a barely damp cloth and never soak them. Put pearl pieces on last of all.

Stones

Stones are set into their settings, so avoid soaking and knocks. Wipe around them with a soft cloth.

Fine chains

Fasten chains before you put them away so they do not knot. Store each one flat in its own pouch.

Rings

Take rings off before washing your hands with soap, sanitising, cooking or gardening.

Questions

Good to know

Can I shower with my jewellery on?

We suggest you take your jewellery off before you shower. Soap, shampoo and hot water all wear on any gold finish over time.

Can I swim in it?

Take it off before swimming. Chlorine and sea water are hard on any finish, and small pieces are easy to lose in the water.

How do I stop chains tangling?

Fasten the clasp, lay the chain flat in its pouch and keep each chain in its own pouch.

Something is wrong with my piece. What should I do?

Get in touch with a photo and your order number at hello@raineandco.co.za. Our returns and exchanges page explains what we can do.

How often should I clean my jewellery?

Wipe each piece with a soft, dry cloth after you wear it, and give it a gentle clean with mild soap and lukewarm water every few weeks, or whenever it looks dull. Always pat it completely dry before you store it.
